Men in the U. S. may be able to purchase some of the world’s most sought-after ED medications without a prescription in a bid to lower their health risks.
The drug-stores industry has been a hot-button topic in recent years, with some looking to acquire more of the same under the name Viagra. Others have turned to e-commerce platforms, making them the go-to for consumers seeking to buy ED medications like sildenafil and tadalafil.
The two most popular products sold at e-commerce stores are Sildenafil and Tadalafil, each with a dosage and formulation that could significantly lower the risk of side effects. Viagra, which was originally developed to treat high blood pressure, may also be able to help.
“ED is a common condition that affects millions of men worldwide, and it’s important that men and their healthcare providers realize the importance of knowing when they can purchase ED medications like Viagra,” said Gary Krasner, a spokesman for the e-commerce industry group eDrugstore.com.
Tadalafil, which is available only by prescription, is similar to sildenafil in dosage and formulation, but it comes in lower doses and is available in a higher dose. It is not available in a generic form, but the drug’s active ingredient, tadalafil, is. Both drugs have similar effects on the body, according to Krasner. In January, the company said it was considering offering men who cannot afford their prescription medications the option to purchase a generic version of Viagra. The generics will be sold through eDrugstore’s website, which operates 24/7 online.
E-commerce giant Amazon has previously offered men who purchase Viagra a 90-day supply of the drug, but that prescription runs out and it must be renewed.
Krasner said that eDrugstore will review its program and will recommend a list of approved generic medications for those who qualify.
“We are working to ensure that people who qualify have access to these medications,” Krasner said.
